My daughter has been helping me and we are very new to this type of work. I would like to have it confirmed that we have placed the sisalation around the right way. We have placed the silver side against the outside of the shed with the blue side showing inside.

Is this correct? If the space you're insulating is habitually too cold, you might want to turn the shiny side toward the living area to create more warmth. You would do this, for example, when insulating the walls of a finished basement.

Foam insulation board also comes with a foil backing, and when the foil is just on one side of the board, you have a decision to make regarding its orientation. If you're wondering whether to put the foil side of foam insulation board shiny side in or out, consider whether you want to make the space inside warmer or cooler.

If you want to make the space warmer, the foil should face inside so it can reflect radiant heat back into the room. When installing a new roof or redoing an existing one, the roof decking goes on first.

This is followed by a moisture barrier, which is typically 30 or heavier roofing felt or tar paper. The foil insulation goes on top of the moisture barrier, followed by the roof covering. If you use bubble foil or rigid foam insulation, it also goes on top of the moisture barrier. Remember that there has to be an air space between the foil and the roofing.

Most metal corrugated roofing automatically provides this air space. If the corrugations are such that only about 20 percent of the material is in contact with the roof, it's fine to lay corrugated roofing directly on the foil.

If you're installing flat roofing or metal tiles, however, you need to construct a batten structure on top of the foil. Roofers typically use one of a number of batten configurations.

The battens can run parallel to the roof ridge or diagonally between the ridge and drip edge. To ensure that air can circulate, it's important to leave a 2- to 3-inch gap between the ends of the batten boards. What do you think? TIA, Ern. Yes they show it blue side up, This is because when you are putting a roof on you put the foil down and then the iron or tiles and it is shiny and shines in your eyes.

It is less efficient this way but blame the unions for wasting energy. You can still buy double sided silver thats what I used. Try laying a roof over silver sarking on a sunny day, its downright dangerous. Thanks Glenn. Any advice on where to get the double sided stuff? Would clearly be ideal. I'd asked at Robot trading and they said it was rare as hen's teeth. Originally Posted by echnidna. Thanks Kenmil tried that but sunglasses dont help much. Therefore, the amount of heat that travels through the insulation by conduction is greatly reduced. If you are planning on making use of foil insulation and would like to install it yourself, here are a few tips that will help you along the way. When installing foil insulation , there are a few key tools you will require.

These vary mildly, depending on whether you are installing underfloor insulation , ceiling insulation , or wall insulation. Essentially, you will require a staple gun and a pair of scissors in each scenario. When it comes to selecting a time to install, it really depends on the conditions of the day. In summer however, it is highly recommended that you execute the install early morning, especially if working in the ceiling, as heat begins to build up as the day goes on, and working conditions can be a bit more tiresome.

Foil insulation , also known as reflective insulation, is a specific type of insulation that is made out of foil and designed to offer exceptional protection against the heat for any property it is installed in. When a home or office is not insulated, there is nothing to prevent the harsh summer or winter conditions from penetrating the exterior walls and entering your space.

It goes without saying that this can create an environment that is too hot or too cold, and uncomfortable for the people living or working inside. To prevent this from happening, foil insulation was invented. Functioning on the basic laws of heat and cold, foil insulation creates a barrier between the inner parts of a home or office, and the external weather conditions.

The reason it is sometimes referred to as reflective insulation is, because on hot days, the reflective surface of the insulation panels literally reflect the sun rays back out, stopping them from entering your property. Foil insulation is used as a means to maintain high levels of thermal efficiency within a property.
