In the pool, Ellie likes to add training aids to vary her training and improve her stroke. Her favourite training aids are a pullbuoy, finger paddles and a snorkel, which Ellie uses during long distance training sessions. She also incorporates training aids into some drills, and in particular likes to use fins and a snorkel to improve and lengthen her freestyle stroke.
Gym — weights are really important for swimmers, and Ellie is in the gym three times a week doing strength-based training. Pre and Post Pool — pre-pool Ellie uses a foam roller, peanut and thera band to warm up, and post-pool she stretches. This morning I was up at 4. I try to be in bed by 9, asleep by 9. The sacrifices that I have to make to be the best that I can be, are quite hard. Simmonds, for many, is one of the best Paralympic swimmers in the world. Does Simmonds have any specific aims for the upcoming Paralympics? We have a qualification standard and event in April time, where we will get given a time that we have to hit.
Is their someone who inspires Simmonds most? There is no single person that I want to be. I just get inspired all the time. And I watched a lady called Nyree Lewis , she was a disability swimmer, and she got a gold medal. I remember as a kid asking, how old do you have to be to go to the Paralympics?
How does she do that? That was when I was really saying, Oh man, I really want to go to a Paralympics, I want to get a gold medal. Does it frustrate her that the word might detract from her accomplishment, might brand her as different? We are athletes. But I think there are different ways in which you can inspire people. Simmonds feels equally as passionate about equality of the sexes in sport. With all the success Simmonds has had and all the awards she has received, she is in the public eye a lot more now.
Has that been difficult to deal with? But it comes with the sport and what I do, so you jut have to try and take it with a pinch of salt.
What are Simmonds interests outside of swimming? I love ocean conservation, swimming in the sea and doing loads of things with animals. I spent an hour and a half chatting to her while eating pancakes. But I'm looking forward to getting back into it in September. I'm missing that competitive edge. It was the best pool, the high performance centre at the time with an incredible coach, Billy Pye. I would go to school there and then Saturday after training in the morning we would drive back home.
A few years back, I got the amazing opportunity to go and conquer that fear. It was the most incredible experience of my whole entire life, it made me realise how amazing the ocean is.
Most of our planet is water and there are so many creatures still being discovered today. The plastic and everything that is affecting it - we need to do more about it.
