When was how i learned to drive published

I would have liked to have read more about how her relationship with Peck affected Lil Bit as she grew up. Jan 30, Drew rated it it was amazing. Poetic, heart wrenching, and complicated. These are the three best words I could find to describe this play. The way it moves is so fluid and powerful and every word and scene has a direct purpose and a direct link to one another.

My only complaint is the ending speeds by so Poetic, heart wrenching, and complicated. My only complaint is the ending speeds by so quickly it feels like I have a bit of whiplash, but the rest of the play stands up so well I suppose I can excuse it. Apr 07, Claire rated it it was ok Shelves: gap-year-theatre. I'm not sure how anyone can see the character of uncle peck as anything but a pedophile, but for some reason most do.

Oct 22, Kelsey rated it liked it Shelves: coming-of-age , fiction , plays. I haven't seen this play acted out, but I think that I wouldn't want to, because the subject matter for me is very uncomfortable. I thought the play was written very well, and I did somewhat enjoy it, but it was also, weird, and awkward.

What I enjoyed most about the play was the little clues throughout it that the uncle was not the nice guy he seemed to be, like the scene with the little boy when they went fishing. I also liked the dialogue, because it was witty and funny. What I didn't like abou I haven't seen this play acted out, but I think that I wouldn't want to, because the subject matter for me is very uncomfortable. What I didn't like about the play was the Greek chorus, which I thought was kind of confusing and stuffed in there awkwardly.

To me, it didn't really make sense. I also didn't like that none of the characters had a real arc. No one learned from their mistakes, and that leads me to believe that maybe the characters thought that the relationship between an uncle and his niece weren't a mistake, which is baffling to me. What bothered me most about this play was the fact that it didn't seem to have a point to it.

The main character, Lil Bit, talks about her memories and experiences with her uncle, and then going off to college and trying to get over the relationship, but in the end, nothing is resolved.

The story doesn't go anywhere. No one learns anything. It's just a girl telling the audience of the relationship she once had with her uncle, and that's it. I'm giving this three stars because I thought it was written very well and I didn't hate it, but I didn't really like it that much, and I probably wouldn't read it again, or see it as an actual play.

It's just too awkward and sexual for me. Mar 17, Julie H. Vogel's How I Learned to Drive deals with some really tough topics, including incest, with equal parts humor and sensitivity. I hope to get to see this play staged, as I know that the tremendous power and impact of the words Vogel's How I Learned to Drive deals with some really tough topics, including incest, with equal parts humor and sensitivity.

I hope to get to see this play staged, as I know that the tremendous power and impact of the words could easily be undermined by too realistic a dramatization of particular scenes. I suppose that's why we see live performances and don't just read plays, isn't it? Jul 06, CheyAnne rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorite-books. How I Learned to Drive is a play about a young girl growing up with a secret. No one knows this secret except her uncle.

The secret is that her uncle is crazy in love with his niece. It's well written and very witty. This young girl's family is absolutely crazy and their dialogue is written in greek chorus style.

There are small sililoquies throughout the entire play spoken by different members of the family. Laugh out loud funny! It drives the audience or reader to feel slightly uncomfortable a How I Learned to Drive is a play about a young girl growing up with a secret.

It drives the audience or reader to feel slightly uncomfortable and that is exactly what theater should do. Oct 30, Sof Sears rated it really liked it Shelves: plays-i-love. Devastating, incisive, illuminated. So good. This is why I love theatre, why I love playwriting - because work like this exists. It's this constellation of little hurts, of the scars that accumulate from trauma, how it wrecks us and confuses our softness, makes us question ourselves and the world around us.

Read this play. Nov 11, Sheri rated it it was amazing Shelves: play , male-female-power-sex-attractivenes , coming-of-age. I read this today because I am auditioning for the show this evening. I sort of stumbled upon it and was very much pleasantly surprised.

It is funny and believable and yet sad and poignant. Aug 07, Jack Wolfe rated it it was amazing. There are all kinds of reasons why people read what they do, and it'd be pretty shitty of me to say that some reasons are better than others. Like, if you're in it for just the titillation Keep on having that party. Me personally, I've always known purer forms of good ol' pleasure than reading like listening to "Ziggy Stardust" or drinking Labatt , and I don't think reading would be a hobby of mine if I didn't think I got something MORE out of it.

There's a specific sort of expe There are all kinds of reasons why people read what they do, and it'd be pretty shitty of me to say that some reasons are better than others. There's a specific sort of experience that reading a good book gives me that is different from the pleasure of beer and music and sports!

Like meditation, reading is a solitary act that occurs in silence that ends up having a healing and calming effect. Unlike meditation-- I think-- reading can also fuck up my head. And somehow I'm into this part of it too. I say all this being "How I Learned to Drive" is not a fun romp. It is one of those "head fucking" books A real soul killer.

It rips along, sure, but you're turning the pages in disgust. You want to know what will happen even though you already know and you already know that it's totally fucking weird and sad. It's a play of ideas, and its main idea is that American society has reprehensible ideas about sex, sexuality, and gender, ideas that wreck the lives of both women and men.

But it's a play, too, and though it's not a fun romp, it does have this sort of whimsical spirit to it-- what with the Greek choruses and the "pedophilish" Vogel's term 60's music and the slideshow images and the creative, risk-taking structure-- which makes it all the more moving.

The "scheme" of the play somehow only intensifies the very humane characterizations at its center. This is maybe the seventh play I've read this year, and I just gotta say that I've so impressed by how deep American drama is. It's too thorny, too dark, too invested in reality. I'm so glad I was able to experience it in textual form.

I doubt I'll ever see it performed because Well, I live in the Midwest. View 1 comment.
